چکیده

Based on an extended model of Marangoni convection during absorption accompanied by chemical reaction certain characteristics of the process are studied. Thus, the probability of oscillatory modes occurring in the system is analysed, the dimensions of the convective cells are evaluated and the gas-liquid contact time necessary for the instability to appear is determined. The quantitative conclusions are compared with the reliant experimental data concerning the absorption of CO 2 into monoethanolamine in both wetted-wall and packed columns.

Growth of non-modal transient structures during the spreading of surfactant coated films

The spreading of surfactant coated thin liquid films is often accompanied by an instability producing significant film corrugation, fingering and branching. Marangoni stresses, responsible for the rapid and spontaneous spreading, are suspected as the main cause of unstable flow. Traditional eigenvalue analysis of a self-similar solution describing Marangoni driven spreading has predicted only s...

Gas Absorption with Chemical Reaction in Turbulent Flow

In order to increase the rate of gas absorption, chemical reaction in the liquid phase is considered. The purpose of this paper was to simulate gas absorption process by a liquid film over a spherical packing incorporating eddy viscosity and diffusivity. Second order chemical reaction for two different cases (fast and slow) were considered. The system partial differential equations obtained...

Hydrodynamic fingering instability of driven wetting films: hindrance by diffusion

Recent experimental and theoretical efforts have revealed the existence of a fingering instability at the moving front of thin liquid films forced to spread under gravitational, rotational or surface shear stresses, as for example by using the Marangoni effect. We describe how the presence of a precursor film in front of the spreading macroscopic film, whether it is by prewetting the substrate ...

Instabilities of Thin Viscous Liquid Film Flowing down a Uniformly Heated Inclined Plane

Instabilities of a thin viscous film flowing down a uniformly heated plane are investigated in this study. The heating generates a surface tension gradient that induces thermocapillary stresses on the free surface. Thus, the film is not only influenced by gravity and mean surface tension but also the thermocapillary force is acting on the free surface. Moreover, the heat transfer at the free su...

Flow-controlled growth in Langmuir monolayers

We propose a hydrodynamic mechanism, based on the Marangoni flow, to describe growth instabilities of liquid-condensed islands in the supercooled liquid-expanded phase of two-dimensional Langmuir monolayers. This Marangoni instability is intrinsic to Langmuir monolayers and is not controlled by the expulsion of chemical impurities from the liquid-condensed phase. The hydrodynamic transport of t...
